The Biblical Meaning of Weather

The Bible contains much prophetic symbolism. God speaks through everything. In 1 Corinthians 2:15 (AMP) we read, “But the spiritual man [the spiritually mature Christian] judges all things [questions, examines and applies what the Holy Spirit reveals], yet is himself judged by no one [the unbeliever cannot judge and understand the believer’s spiritual nature].” Those who are spiritually mature and in tune with the Holy Spirit have an understanding of how the spiritual world affects the natural.

Verse 14 of 1 Corinthians 2 says, “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” Some things can only be discerned by the Spirit. They make no natural sense to others. To the spiritual, all things are spiritual. The pure in heart can detect God through and in anything. In Scripture, God speaks through weather-related occurrences. Here are the prophetic meanings of various elements of the weather:

The Hail

Hail is referenced several times throughout the Bible. In Exodus 9:18 the Lord warns Pharaoh through Moses, “Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause very heavy hail to rain down, such as has not been in Egypt since its founding until now.” At times in biblical history, hail is sign of God’s judgment on the affairs of humanity. This does not mean that every time it hails there is judgment. Symbolically, however, hail represents God’s judgment and correction, balancing the scales. When we see hail, it is a reminder that God is governing the cosmos. It is He who corrects wrongs and sets the earth in order.

Revelation 16:21 says, “And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.” These are the words of John when he was on the Isle of Patmos. He saw many visions of the future and what was to come. Specifically in this passage, he saw hail of massive size falling on people. According to Scripture, the hail is an accompaniment of one of the plagues that will be released upon the earth in the last days.

The Rain

In the Old Testament, rain was attributed to the blessing of God. Deuteronomy 28:12 says, “The LORD will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.” Because the ancient world was run by a system of agriculture, rain was necessary to live. Cities and civilizations were only as strong as their military defense and the crops that they produced. Without rain, there would be no cultivating of crops. This meant there would be no food. The abundance of rain or an unfortunate drought often determined the rise and fall of ancient cities.

Deuteronomy 11:17 shows that when
